What are hemorrhoids?
There are two types of hemorrhoids, internal and external. These are commonly called piles and they are swollen veins that appear inside of the anal channel and occasionally outside. What causes hemorrhoids? Hemorrhoids are typically caused by poor nutrition, dehydration and stress.
- Anal bleeding (without pain)
- Anal itching
- Anal pain or discomfort
Symptoms do not always appear externally. However, in many cases they can cause itching, discomfort and bleeding. A thromboses refers to a clot that forms in a hemorrhoid. A thromboses is not necessarily dangerous but can certainly be very painful and it may become necessary to drain the blood in order to correct the symptoms.

What causes hemorrhoids?
- Tension and/or stress
- Obesity or overweight
- Chronical diarrhea
- Anal sex
- Unhealthy nutrition
- Sedentary lifestyle
Dr. Sergio Del Hoyo recommends a high fiber diet to begin to feel relief from the hemorrhoid symptoms. Eating a diet high in dietary fiber ensures consistency in the food consumed, which causes softer stools reducing constipation and/or pain during bowel movements.
Eating foods high in dietary fiber like vegetables, fruits, nuts, cereals and some grains, along with drinking plenty of water are ways to get much needed relief from hemorrhoids. High-fiber dietary supplements can also relieve hemorrhoid symptoms. These are all valid options but they must be supplemented with plenty of water, otherwise they can also cause constipation as well as more serious problems.
Spending a lot of time on the toilet is a frequently a cause for both internal and external hemorrhoids. Eating spicy and highly-seasoned foods, not drinking enough water and leading a sedentary lifestyle can also cause hemorrhoid symptoms.
