What types of surgery exist to lose weight?
There are multiple effective weight loss surgeries, each with its own benefits, eligibility criteria, and recovery process. Here’s an overview of the most common types we perform at our bariatric center in Puerto Vallarta:

Gastric sleeve surgery is a bariatric procedure that reduces the size of the stomach, helping you feel full with much smaller portions of food. This leads to significant and sustainable weight loss when paired with healthy lifestyle changes.
In addition to long-term results, gastric sleeve surgery in Mexico offers several key benefits:
- Short recovery time – many patients return to work within 1 to 2 weeks
- Permanent reduction of stomach capacity
- Lower levels of Ghrelin, the hormone responsible for hunger, which increases satiety
- More affordable pricing compared to the US and Canada
Please note: results may vary depending on each person.

Gastric bypass surgery is considered the gold standard in bariatric procedures because of its strong and lasting results. While many believe it’s only for people with severe or morbid obesity, it can also benefit those with other health conditions linked to excess weight.
This procedure may be right for you if you:
- Have type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance
- Suffer from high blood pressure or metabolic syndrome
- Experience gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Struggle with significant weight regain after other treatments
In Mexico, gastric bypass surgery is performed by experienced specialists in state-of-the-art hospitals at a fraction of the cost compared to the US and Canada, making it an accessible and trusted option for many international patients.
Please note: results may vary depending on each person.

Gastric band surgery was a widely used weight loss procedure for many years, but it is currently no longer commonly performed. This shift is largely due to the high rate of weight regain experienced by many patients within a few years after the surgery.
Because of this, gastric bands are now often being removed in patients who have regained weight and are seeking weight loss revision surgery. These revisions typically involve removing the gastric band and converting to a more effective procedure such as a gastric sleeve or gastric bypass.

Bariatric revision surgery is an option for patients who have had a previous weight loss procedure but did not achieve the desired results or have experienced weight regain over time. It can involve converting a previous surgery, such as a gastric band or sleeve, to a more effective procedure like gastric bypass or SADI.
Your health is in your hands, and we are here to help you. For your convenience, we accept VISA and MasterCard, and for some surgical treatments, interest-free monthly payment plans are available.

Mini Gastric Bypass is a simplified and effective weight loss procedure that combines restriction and malabsorption. It involves creating a small gastric pouch and rerouting a portion of the intestine, helping patients lose weight and improve obesity-related conditions.
This procedure may be a good fit if you:
- Want a shorter, less complex surgery compared to traditional bypass.
- Are looking for strong and sustained weight loss results
- Have regained weight after a previous bariatric procedure
- Suffer from conditions like type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, or GERD

GASTRIC SLEEVE
Gastric sleeve surgery is a surgical procedure which consists of making the stomach’s capacity for food intake smaller, so the patient feels satisfied by eating a smaller amount of food. This procedure is performed laparoscopically.
Furthermore, it has been studied that in the portion of the stomach that is removed from the body there are cells that produce a substance called Ghrelin, which is related to lack of satiety when eating. In patients this substance is elevated and makes the patient continue and continue eating and when this substance goes down then the sensation of continuing to eat in large quantities decreases.
In this surgery performed by laparoscopy, the average surgical time is 60 minutes, patients generally stay only one night in the hospital.
Support with supplements such as protein, vitamins and minerals is required but less strict than Bypass. And only for a certain time, generally during the first year of surgery.
Gastric sleeve surgery allows the patient to eat all types of foods but in smaller quantities, which makes them feel satisfied when eating with small amounts of food, thus reducing hunger and allowing them to continue losing weight and when they reach the ideal weight to be able to maintain it more easily, there is no dumping syndrome in this procedure.
It is suggested that the patient does not suffer from significant gastroesophageal reflux to obtain better results from the surgery. Because surgery in patients with severe reflux can increase reflux symptoms because it increases pressure in the new stomach.
* The final results may be different in each patient and depend on the type of surgery, changes in eating behavior, exercise, medical and nutritional monitoring.
GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY
Gastric bypass surgery is considered the Gold standard of bariatric surgeries www.asmbs.org. Many people believe that it is only a surgery for patients who suffer from morbid obesity or extreme obesity and that you need to be very overweight to qualify for a gastric bypass, but in reality gastric bypass surgery can be suitable for many patients who They are looking for bariatric surgery who may also suffer from metabolic diseases such as diabetes, elevated blood pressure and in cases of obesity and gastroesophageal reflux. Gastric Bypass surgery is performed by laparoscopy, a single night in hospital is required, average surgery time is 2 hours. And practically the patient is walking after surgery 4 hours after being operated on. Supplementation with protein, vitamins and minerals is necessary for at least a period of time of no less than 2 years.
GASTRIC BAND SURGERY
Gastric band surgery was a surgery that was performed during a long period of time, but it is currently not being practiced or performed. This is due to the patients who, in many cases, regained weight within a few years of having the surgery. Because of this, gastric bands are instead being removed in patients that regained weight after gastric band surgery and are seeking a weight loss revision surgery that can mean the removal of the gastric band for a conversion gastric sleeve o gastric bypass.
BARIATRIC REVISION SURGERY
Bariatric Revisions in Mexico are performed on patients who have previously undergone bariatric surgery, such as Gastric Sleeve surgery or Gastric Bypass surgery.
This procedure known as bariatric revision surgery is most necessary for patients who experience significant weight regain after reaching a low weight.
The main reason patients consider having a bariatric revision is related to weight loss, either not enough weight was lost after surgery or too much weight was regained. Therefore, before undergoing a bariatric check-up, it is important that the patient follow the surgeon’s instructions.
MINIGASTRIC BYPASS
Minigastric bypass surgery refers to a gastric bypass but with a single anastomosis. The traditional Y bypass has two connections between the intestine and the stomach and the minigastric bypass only has one connection from the intestine to the stomach. It consists of making a small stomach to make the patient feel satisfied by eating less food. And use the intestine as a traditional bypass but with a single union or anastomosis. It is a surgery indicated in patients with morbid obese and even super obese in whom a traditional Y bypass would be more complex to perform and require longer surgical time. The minigastric bypass is a surgery that allows weight loss equal to or greater than the Y gastric bypass. But it has the effect of having bile reflux in some patients since the bile passes just below the new stomach, which does not happen this way. in Y gastric bypass.
SINGLE INCISION LAPAROSCIPIC SLEEVE (SILS)
Single-port gastric sleeve surgery or known as SILS (Single-incision laparoscipic sleeve gastrectomy) is a relatively new approach to performing gastric sleeve. Technically, it is performing a traditional gastric sleeve by removing 80% of the stomach’s capacity and in this way make the patient feel satisfied with less amount of food, lose weight while maintaining that weight requirement, the difference between SILS and laparoscopic gastric sleeve is the site where the incisions are made and the number of incisions. In SILS the incisions are in the navel, there are only three incisions which are barely visible and aesthetically friendly. It is a requirement to be a candidate for SILS by laparoscopy that the BMI be less than 35 and in the best of cases BMI 32, for the surgery to be performed in better safety conditions.
