Learn about the process of bariatric surgery and schedule yours today. Schedule your evaluation with a specialist: Doctor Sergio Del Hoyo.

Bariatric Surgery Process

The bariatric surgery process begins with a medical consultation, during which the patient’s medical history and weight loss goals are discussed. The patient will then undergo preoperative tests, such as blood tests and imaging tests, to make sure they are healthy enough for the operation.
Once everything is in order, schedule the patient for the appropriate surgery. Bariatric surgeries are usually classified into two broad categories: restrictive and malabsorptive.
Restrictive procedures, such as gastric sleeve or gastric bypass, reduce the size of the stomach so that it can only hold a smaller amount of food. This helps limit calorie intake and leads to weight loss. Malabsorptive procedures such as duodenal switch and biliopancreatic diversion also involve reducing the size of the stomach, but they also change the way food is absorbed in the intestines.
The intervention is performed under general anesthesia and usually lasts between one and three hours. After the procedure, patients can expect to stay in the hospital for a few days to recover. They will then be given dietary guidelines that they must follow for several months after the intervention, such as eating little and avoiding certain foods.
Patients may also need supplements or medications to help prevent nutritional deficiencies. By following these guidelines and with proper exercise, patients can expect significant weight loss over time. To ensure success, it is important that you also have regular follow-up appointments with your doctor.
